If Pythonista had a developers conference, what city should it be?
-
PDC, "Pythonista Developers Conference" until @omz names it himself. I think there should be one. I know python has pycon or something like that, but the natural evolution of a program like this is that it should have its own annual gathering! I Would love to meet all the guys on this site at such an event. If such an event should occur, it would make sense to me that the first event would be done in omz's home City , or close by , first. Just out of respect. Subsequent years , could be held in different countries.
As omz is doing all the work, he should not be called upon to do any organisation. That would be up to us, the enthusiastic users. But would want to schedule the event so omz had time that he could attend and speak/present!I would happily be one of the organisers. I have been involved in many such events, even in recent years. Not programming , but the organisation of between 60-350 guys coming together from all around the world , normally 4-5 days. I am a member of another international club. You will laugh, but we play dice. It's not about gambling! Just expats meeting up having a great time. But regardless, I have experience with this.
Why did I write this? I want people to think about having annual get together to discuss all issues related to Pythonista, meet all the guys. Hear omz's vision for the future etc...
but It needs someone to start talking about it
In my honest opinion I think omz will be too modest to get this sort of thing going. We need to plant the seeds. But at the same time we have make sure he has control over it. Meaning that agenda's , names/acronyms , etc are approved by him at the same time not burdening him with all the minor details. As long as his vision is being represented, and he is being briefed I think it could work well.
I said it the nice way in the last paragraph. The hard and direct way is to say not to hijack omz's program for our own benefit!

Berlin!!
-
Does omz live in Berlin or in Norway/Oslo?
-
Haha, no, I live in Berlin, though you're right that Ole is a Scandinavian name (they're kinda popular in Germany, probably because of Astrid Lindgren, Ikea, or both).
-
How 'bout we have it in New York! :)
-
Ok, Berlin it is then! Are you open to the idea @omz ?
-
@Webmaster4o , should be the home country first! In my experience after that, it works like the Olympics, cites put forward a proposal, they are reviewed. But that city takes on the majority of the organisation, but in the early days other people will come and help. Then you have sort of rule, every 4 years has to go back to the home city (Berlin) in this case. For it to be successful you need to build up a charter. Make it predictable and well organised.
-
Yep. As a 13-year old living in the U.S., I'm not gonna make it until it's in New York. Oh well.
-
Are you open to the idea @omz ?
Sure, I'd be there if it's somewhere I can travel easily (i.e. within Europe).
To be honest, I have my doubts if the community is big enough for something like this, but I'm a natural pessimist, so don't listen to me. ;)
-
If it ends up happening, livestream it. I'll watch.
-
@omz , your coding /app, whatever want you call it tells me you are not a persimist. Far from it. I am a over the top optimist. I believe in the theme of the film 'field of dreams'. If you build it they will come. You have built it. And we are coming.
Ole, are you ready to have a coffee or a beer with me in Berlin in 2 or 3 days? I am serious. If you have time I will come and have a coffee or beer with you, shake your hand, and let you know I am not full of shit. I will only stay one day or so, because I have a very important meeting in thailand 1st sept.
-
@Webmaster4o, in previous clubs I have been in, we make a scholarship fund for the youth or up and coming in the club. A lot of people put in a little money to sponsor someone to attend these events. So it could possible for you to attended an event like this, if we get a scholarship into the charter. Everything is possible
-
@Webmaster4o In the same boat, except 17 ;)
-
@techteej , but reach for the sky.... Nothing is out of your reach. Good python programmers are in the top 3 or 4 best paid programmers according to what I have read. I mean good ones. But regardless, my advise would always have integrity in what you do. Long term it will pay off. Just being a gun for fire so to speak, is not always the best. Loyalty, integrity , attention to detail In my mind will get you further in you career , does not matter what language you end up programming in.
-
@ccc, are you up for a coffee in Berlin in about 3 days? I will not drink coffee , but you can ;) @Jonb , I have no idea where you are stationed , you have time to join ?
-
Ok, just after midnight for me here now, so will go do some shopping then sleep :) I was out early today :) but get ready for me @omz. Just one coffee
-
@techteej I'm almost 14, but still the youngest here I think.
-
@omz, I won't be there in 3 days for coffee. My thai friend is going to come with me, he has never been out of Thailand before, always told him I would take him on a trip one day. I also would prefer not to travel alone :) but it will take 10 days or so before he will get a visa. I have obligations in Thailand until the 12th sept, so will go over sometime close after that. Just hope you have time for a coffee that's all. Will let you know once we have the tickets.
If for some reason you are not there or have no time, I have a lot of friends to catch up with in Europe, so will be no problem either way.
-
@Phuket2 Okay, I'm not in town this weekend (two family birthdays), so that probably wouldn't have worked out anyway – if you were actually serious – taking an intercontinental flight just to have some coffee really doesn't seem worth it... But if you're somewhere near Berlin for vacation or something, let me know, so we can have a coffee/beer or two.
-
Ok, that was lucky then. But I was serious. But I was a little drunk, it didn't make a whole lot of sense to come for a day or 2 when I woke up :) but no doubt about it. Coming to Europe around 14th sept. Will go to Denmark first, then will communicate with you and take a flight to Belgium if you are available. Only 56min flight. Believe me, spent a few hours on this already today with my thai friend getting his visa my travel agent and the visa agent. No reason for me to go to Europe as I see most my friends here in Thailand, coming to meet you. Maybe some of the other guys close by, might like to come and meet up for a drink/dinner also. But in the next 3 days or so, I will have it all nailed down and will issue tickets. The Belgium flight will be a side trip out of Copenhagen, so I will leave that flexible. We are thinking about 6 or 7 days in Copenhagen. So have room to move and fit in with you.
Oh, my friend is just a friend. Just a very good one. Not that it matters, but I am only into women.
