Welcome!
This is the community forum for my apps Pythonista and Editorial.
For individual support questions, you can also send an email. If you have a very short question or just want to say hello ā I'm @olemoritz on Twitter.
It has been 9 months since the latest version

First, sorry for my English.
Sincerely, I can understand that to maintain this kind of app needs a lot of time and that this kind of (technical) app does not have a lot of users.
Thus, I can also understand it is not easy to earn enough money with this app.
But, personally, I could not live without this app, and I would agree to pay a fee per year to be sure this app will survive for many years -
I am also willing to pay for continued support for this super application.
-
I don't use twitter - has one one tried there?
-
@reticulated I don't use it but a Google search "ole zorn twitter" shows his last post on 14 August 2018.
-
Well @administrators @moderators maybe someone knows?
I gotta admit I am not sure how I will go on without Pythonista either.. I sent an email to the support email hoping he will respond.
-
@cvp, I am with you on the subscription model, as this always-in-my-pocket tool is a big part of me getting any coding done these days.
Maybe combined with open sourcing some parts?
-
I'm really scared that Apple could buy this app as they did for Workflow š¢
-
It would be nice to hear something about the planned functionality in a next version of Pythonista and also when we might expect such an update. I think we all agree this is an awesome app with tons of functionality, but iOS and Python are developing rapidly (some modules / frameworks in Pythonista really need updating) and it would be nice to know that Pythonista will keep up with this. This is an app for which I would gladly pay for each update, by the way, since it's one of those apps that really stands out and makes a difference. I hope omz decides to share some of his plans / ideas for Pythonista.
-
@cvp Yes, it is a wonderful app. I can pay anything to keep it updated.
-
Hello. I can't pay for a anual suscription. I made the effort paying the app, but even I loving it, I can't pay every year. I hope that never change.
-
I would also happily pay for a subscription if that helps us get more active development. It would be a shame to have such a wonderful app not be kept up to date. I usually wouldn't even purchase an app that hasn't been updated in 9 months.
It's nice to see other apps tightly integrating with Shortcuts (Scriptable is a promising app, and Drafts also does well at this). I would much rather automate things with Python than JavaScript. I hope Pythonista eventually gets full x-callback-url support so it can be used more in that regard.
-
@comfortablynick You can try JSbox on ios. Iām sure that it is much better than Scriptable.
-
@omz 's silence does not bode well for the future of this app.
-
If omz is tired, he can have a rest for a while. But it has been 8 months and we still don't know the progress. And honestly speaking, almost 1 release per year is not good enough.
-
By the way, this is the log for Codea. https://twitter.com/CodeaCommits
-
All,
@omz isn't a fan of subscriptions from what I can see in the history of the forums, which is why before I suggested he have an annual in-app upgrade for those who are able/willing to pay.
Early access to features or something ought to be enough- if at all required.
For all it's worth- I pay more for apps I use less, so I would pay subscription.
-
I can pay more if he update frequently.
-
@lpl
Well, we need to remember economics of what @ole does.
If 100 people pay $30.00 per year, that's $3000 - not worth too much additional effort.
1000 people? $30,000. Quite a sum of money- but won't get you far in many places, ie Berlin.
Don't forget Apple's 30% cut, which isn't taken into account above.
10,000 people - well now we are talking- however I don't think that even 1000 annual subscribers is possible, especially as an "upgrade"
Here is why:
-
You still need a Mac (currently, though I have an idea for it) to build/distribute on App store
-
Swift is dead easy to learn, and is fully supported native in iOS.
-
There are FAR less developers than end users.
-
Developing software on a phone/ipad - however nice on Pythonista isn't even a full solution.
-
There are numerous projects to build iOS apps in python that are free and open source- nothing like Pythonista, but FREE.
-
Pythonista's main draw is the fact that Ole has created a ton of libs to support native functionality (i.e. all of the internal modules)
--
The bottom line: The amount of work it would take to guarantee updates, there isn't a market which can compete with his other business: indy developer.
This is very much a project of passion, and the price tag that it sits at is quite low.
Coda is a very nice mobile IDE, $30.00 (CAD) to buy and it doesn't support any languages internally.
If @ole ever gets tired of supporting it, I might ask him to release it open source and I would contribute regularly.
Other than that - we need to get more people (a lot) onto Pythonista or I fear it will never be a top priority.
Note: I don't know Ole personally, and I am throwing random numbers out. But we all need to keep in mind Ole isn't getting independently wealthy from Pythonista or Editorial.

@reticulated Agree. But I still want to know the progress, like I'll have a rest for several months, I finished the next version or I reviewed the code. He does not need to report to us everyday, but 9 months...
I can accept one version per year. But I wonder if we still need to wait 9 months. -
In a word, I can accept one version per year since the price is not high and omz can't earn a lot from that.
But I think he should tell us about the progress sometimes, I'm worried about being dropped and I'm happy to hear the new features.
And I also saw some topics about pandas and other modules. But he still did not give an certain answer.
We want pythonista to be better for all of us including auther, not just for the person who makes the suggestion.
