Welcome!
This is the community forum for my apps Pythonista and Editorial.
For individual support questions, you can also send an email. If you have a very short question or just want to say hello — I'm @olemoritz on Twitter.
It has been 9 months since the latest version
-
If omz is tired, he can have a rest for a while. But it has been 8 months and we still don't know the progress. And honestly speaking, almost 1 release per year is not good enough.
-
By the way, this is the log for Codea. https://twitter.com/CodeaCommits
-
All,
@omz isn't a fan of subscriptions from what I can see in the history of the forums, which is why before I suggested he have an annual in-app upgrade for those who are able/willing to pay.
Early access to features or something ought to be enough- if at all required.
For all it's worth- I pay more for apps I use less, so I would pay subscription.
-
I can pay more if he update frequently.
-
@lpl
Well, we need to remember economics of what @ole does.
If 100 people pay $30.00 per year, that's $3000 - not worth too much additional effort.
1000 people? $30,000. Quite a sum of money- but won't get you far in many places, ie Berlin.
Don't forget Apple's 30% cut, which isn't taken into account above.
10,000 people - well now we are talking- however I don't think that even 1000 annual subscribers is possible, especially as an "upgrade"
Here is why:
-
You still need a Mac (currently, though I have an idea for it) to build/distribute on App store
-
Swift is dead easy to learn, and is fully supported native in iOS.
-
There are FAR less developers than end users.
-
Developing software on a phone/ipad - however nice on Pythonista isn't even a full solution.
-
There are numerous projects to build iOS apps in python that are free and open source- nothing like Pythonista, but FREE.
-
Pythonista's main draw is the fact that Ole has created a ton of libs to support native functionality (i.e. all of the internal modules)
--
The bottom line: The amount of work it would take to guarantee updates, there isn't a market which can compete with his other business: indy developer.
This is very much a project of passion, and the price tag that it sits at is quite low.
Coda is a very nice mobile IDE, $30.00 (CAD) to buy and it doesn't support any languages internally.
If @ole ever gets tired of supporting it, I might ask him to release it open source and I would contribute regularly.
Other than that - we need to get more people (a lot) onto Pythonista or I fear it will never be a top priority.
Note: I don't know Ole personally, and I am throwing random numbers out. But we all need to keep in mind Ole isn't getting independently wealthy from Pythonista or Editorial.

@reticulated Agree. But I still want to know the progress, like I'll have a rest for several months, I finished the next version or I reviewed the code. He does not need to report to us everyday, but 9 months...
I can accept one version per year. But I wonder if we still need to wait 9 months. -
In a word, I can accept one version per year since the price is not high and omz can't earn a lot from that.
But I think he should tell us about the progress sometimes, I'm worried about being dropped and I'm happy to hear the new features.
And I also saw some topics about pandas and other modules. But he still did not give an certain answer.
We want pythonista to be better for all of us including auther, not just for the person who makes the suggestion. -
@lpl
Ill give you that an author not responding to his paying customers is challenging.
However - let's give ole a chance to respond.
One last point to make: @ole is a human being, we have no idea what is holding him up.
Personally- when my family is in need I wouldn't give a moments thought to the project.
Again - not suggesting anything, in fact I will be satisfied to know @ole is doing well.

The app was never promised regular updates. It works out of the box to do what it promises to do, and offers a lot of customizability to have it do what you want.
For a while @omz had more regular updates mostly for bug fixes. If there is a bug that is not reported, please report it over at Pythonista-Issues github.
@omz has been quite clear that he has no plans for pandas/scipy support, so if that is the new feature you are hoping for, you shouldn't hold your breath.
-
Excellent point- see my other post which will help all but pandas or scipy.

Well, every app needs regular updates. Most devs have to make tweaks at least with each major iOS version. Then there are changes needed due to new hardware, etc. I'm sure some users will hold off on pulling the trigger on a somewhat pricy app if they see it's not being updated regularly.
I was looking to get Editorial, but it's been even longer since it has seen an update. There's no way I'm going to pay for an app that hasn't even been updated for the iPhone X screen.
I hope he does open source Pythonista if he's no longer interested in maintaining it. A great app like this needs to stay at the head of the pack. I'm seeing updates of other scripting apps integrating directly with Siri Shortcuts, and it just reminds me of how awesome it would be to do that with Python instead of JavaScript.
-
@comfortablynick Omz wrote on twitter recently, he is working on shortcut. And Scriptable s*cks. Try Jsbox, which is also a js ide on ios. https://itunes.apple.com/app/jsbox-learn-to-code/id1312014438

@reticulated have you seen this post?
https://forum.omz-software.com/topic/2747/python-3-x-progress-update/148from @omz: That's very kind of you, but I really wouldn't feel comfortable taking donations. Pythonista is doing quite well, actually – over the last 3 years, I've managed to convince an average of 50 people every day to buy the app, and as a solo developer without a lot of expenses, I think that's pretty good. :) There are a lot of projects that need donations much more than I do.
from @Olaf : wow, 3 * 365 * 50 > 50,000 Pythonistas, that's quite a global tribe!
