Thinking about jailbreaking
-
Hey again,
So as I just said in another post, I recently got one of those "iCade" things that turns your iPad into an arcade machine. It's really cool and I've been enjoying programming games for it, but it would sure be nice to play some games that are already built (lol). And sadly, the games that were built for it are no longer in the app store. But from what I've read, "jailbreaking" is not actually illegal (and no, I'm not asking for legal advice here lol), and once you do that you can get emulators going! And with emulators you can do joystick mapping, and Bingo! You've got games.
But because it's not officially cool with Apple, it's not like there are docs out there on how to accomplish this. There are all kinds of shady sites saying you should download their tools, but like I said, they're pretty shady. Has anyone here ever jailbroken an iPad before? I'm sure there's a right and a wrong way to do it, and iffy downloads are probably not it. :)

Jailbreaking isn’t hard and safe if you start somewhere that isn’t likely to take you down the wrong path.
I’d recommend checking out this wiki on Reddit.
https://www.reddit.com/r/jailbreak/wiki/index
Solid information there. Make sure you read everything you think is relevant to you carefully.Alternatively you are welcome to post your iPad model and iOS version here and I’ll send you a link that’s relevant for your exact combination. Note that not all combos can be jailbroken. First recommendation is to turn off auto-update of your ipad. The very latest ios version is likely to patch any holes that jailbreak makers were exploiting in the last ios version. Also once you’ve jailbroken, you don’t want your ios updating as an iOS update will immediately remove your jailbreak.

Good to know! I have an iPad Pro (12.9-inch), model number ML3R2LL/A. It has iOS 14.0.1 (18A393). Hope someone found a way for that (very recent but not the latest) version.

Ok, the following set of specs tells me your model is a 1st gen device, critically with the A9X processor: https://www.macofalltrades.com/apple-ipad-pro-12-9-inch-128gb-gold-ml3r2ll-a/#tech-specs
Then checking this handy table (via the jailbreak subreddit wiki I mentioned previously) tells us iOS 14.0.1 can indeed be jailbroken, and the tool we need is checkra1n: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11DABHIIqwYQKj1L83AK9ywk_hYMjEkcaxpIg6phbTf0/htmlview#
Checkra1n has an official website, checkra.in and you can head straight for the latest download on desktop/laptop, not on an ipad/phone (yes it’s a beta, that’s fine)
https://checkra.in/releases/0.12.2-betaNext up, make sure you have iTunes installed (easiest way to ensure you have the necessary drivers) then start iTunes up, connect your phone via a cable and make sure iTunes can see your phone. Once you’ve seen your phone show up in iTunes you can close iTunes again (you know the phone is connected and recognised).
Then just launch checkra1n and follow instructions. It should be self explanatory from there on.
If you feel more comfortable following a guide from an established website, checkout this Redmond Pie post about your exact combo: https://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-ios-14.0.1-using-checkra1n-0.11.0-heres-how-to-guide/
I’ve often used Redmond Pie posts as a jailbreak guide and they tend to be solid.Good luck and don’t forget to backup your iPad first.
