How Does Gum Disease Affect You?
-
Gum Inflammation: The initial stage of gum disease is often characterized by redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums, especially during brushing or flossing. This stage is known as gingivitis and is usually reversible with proper oral hygiene.
Bad Breath: Gum disease can lead to persistent bad breath, also known as halitosis. The bacteria present in the infected gums produce volatile sulfur compounds that contribute to foul-smelling breath.
Gum Recession: As gum disease progresses, the gums may start to recede or pull away from the teeth. This can expose the tooth roots and create pockets between the teeth and gums where bacteria can accumulate.
